Adjunct Faculty and Morality
A thought-provoking article on the treatment of adjunct faculty is found in today's Inside Higher Ed. Tenured professors at Marquette University, a Roman Catholic institution, question morality of paying adjunct professors a rather low salary, not providing them health insurance, and placing them in a situation with no real academic freedom. They pose some very good questions.

I think a similar argument could be made about graduate students. While academic freedom is in the eye of the adviser, little to no health insurance, plus relatively low stipends (with the expectation of not working outside the department) may not be the healthiest environment for students to grow.
