Conference: Religion, Nature & Culture

A new conference announcement:

"Religion, Nature, and Progress"
3rd International Conference of the
International Society for the Study of Religion, Nature & Culture (ISSRNC)
at the University of Amsterdam
23-26 July 2009
www.religionandnature.com/society/conferences.htm

Conference Description and Thematic Focus

The intrinsic relation between ideas of progress and the impact that such progress has on ecosystems and natural environments is a central aspect of discussions about the ecological crisis. Notions of progress can take on quite different meanings, from economic progress to social improvements to progress in the natural sciences; religious discourses, too, often make use of metaphors of progress.

Usually, these discussions seem to imply that the concepts involved-- progress, nature, crisis, etc.--have a clear and simple meaning. Closer reflection, however, reveals that such concepts are themselves elements and products of a larger discourse, or worldview, that conceptualizes "nature" and the human relation with it in a particular way. Many underlying presumptions and evaluations have a long history in (western) culture, and often they are informed by religious views on the status of nature and humanity, views that vary widely and are often contradictory to one another. The western background of these concepts is apparent and should be the object of critical investigation.

This international conference addresses the critical intersections of religion, nature, and progress in a multidisciplinary way, in order to give insight into the different positions of these subjects both in history and vis-a-vis the current debates on climate change, environmental policy, and cultural development. It is increasingly acknowledged that religions and metaphysics, which inform worldviews and notions of progress, have played and still play an important role in these debates and that a clear understanding of them is indispensable for policies and practices striving to solve the environmental, climate, and
other crises. The overall theme provides a spectrum of subtopics and questions that can be engaged in a critical dialogue among various disciplines, such as the academic study of religion, history, anthropology, philosophy, cultural studies, the natural sciences, social sciences, economics, politics, architecture, urban planning, etc.

The conference will take place in Amsterdam, situated in one of the most densely populated areas in the world, facing many ecological challenges that ask for reflection and active response. The Netherlands have a long history of 'improving nature,' from protection against sea water to creating new land and learning to set up natural environments in highly populated spaces. The city of Amsterdam has committed itself to an ambitious plan of environmentally sustainable development. Therefore, the conference theme, although international and global in perspective, fits the conditions of this modern western well.

"Rate My Professor" Ratings Correlate with Formal Ratings

This item does not address the psychology of religion, but will be of interest to you if you teach or take courses at a university. There is growing evidence (pdf file) that ratings provided at Rate My Professor show a substantial correlation with formal, in-class student ratings. A new article in Inside Higher Ed gives a good summary of the research, and provides the usual disclaimes (e.g., ratings of teaching effectiveness should not be based solely on student perceptions or satisfaction, etc.). If you teach college courses, you'll want to read this.

Political Extremism and Psychopathology

Two quick items:

1- Richard Koenigsberg offers an online publication, Political Violence and the Concept of Collective Psychopathology. Religion is among the factors he addresses in that document.

2- For those of you who are in the Washington, DC, area:

The 20th annual meeting of the Association for the Advancement of Philosophy and Psychiatry is meeting May 3 & 4, 2008, in Washington DC. The theme of the conference is "Political Extremism and Psychopathology". The group will meet at The Fairmont Washington, Executive Forum (2401 M. Street, NW, Washington DC). I am told there is no fee or registration required.

The program is available (pdf file) at http://www3.utsouthwestern.edu/aapp/Political%20Extremism2008.pdf. Several presentations deal with religion's role(s) in political extremism.

Adjunct Faculty and Morality

A thought-provoking article on the treatment of adjunct faculty is found in today's Inside Higher Ed. Tenured professors at Marquette University, a Roman Catholic institution, question morality of paying adjunct professors a rather low salary, not providing them health insurance, and placing them in a situation with no real academic freedom. They pose some very good questions.

Secularism on College Campuses

Inside Higher Ed has a discussion on the role of religion and secularism on college campuses. The article describes an ongoing study of how secularism has affected four liberal arts colleges when it comes to discussing "life's big questions." The qualitative research suggests that as a college promotes a secular vision, questions of existence become relegated to philosophy, religion and sometimes psychology courses. Read more here.

Karen Armstrong on Compassion

Karen Armstrong, well-known for her work on the history of religion, can be seen in this TED talk on compassion. Her discussion of religious belief and compassion ranges through history and across religious traditions. She advocates for religion as a force for harmony in the world, based on the Golden Rule. Her ideas deserve a wide hearing and implementation.

BBC - When Muslims Become Christians

The BBC News Magazine has a very interesting article, When Muslims Become Christians, discussing the treatment of Muslims who become apostate. Although it is widely believed that apostates are to be put to death, this is based on two Hadiths and not on the Qur'an. Read more in the article.

The three doctoral positions concern a research project on religious fundamentalism and convictional dogmatism, a large interdisciplinary project between psychology (social and developmental) and law (including social criminology). All positions include successful preparation of a Ph.D. More in details:

1.1. One doctoral position will focus on the study of consequences of fundamentalism on interpersonal behavior (altruism, aggression, submission) and requires skills in social experimental psychology.
1.2. A second doctoral position will focus on moral judgment (cognitive, emotional, and relational aspects) as reflecting convictional dogmatism and requires knowledge of moral and personality psychology.
1.3. A third doctoral position will focus on the study of the development of ethnic and religious identities and pluralism among children as well as the study of regressive tendencies in cognitive development of adults high in dogmatism; it will require skills on developmental and educational psychology.

2. The post-doctoral position (PhD in psychology) concerns three studies on (a) the role religion plays on the acculturation between the host society and immigrant minorities (of both high and low SES); (b) the distinction between islamophobia and anti-Arab prejudice; and (c) the possible “aversive racism” among the left-wing. Both surveys and experiments are planned.

The fellowship amounts to a net salary of approx. 1.413 € monthly for each of the doctoral positions, and approx. 1.963 € monthly for the postdoctoral one (both are tax free with right to Social Security).

Religious Polygamy in the News

Religious extremism is in the news here in the US. Unless you've been living under a rock, you have heard that Texas authorities have taken custody of hundreds of children living at a Fundamentalist LDS compound in rural Texas. Thus far, it is not clear whether or not they have located the teen who telephoned the child protective services about sexual and physical abuse at the hand of her 50-yr-old husband. In the process of searching for her, authorities have apparently become concerned for the safety of all children there, and have begun procedures to take custody of some of the children they consider to be most endangered.

Current events such as this can be useful in teaching psychology of religion courses. For news coming from reporters who have been covering the FLDS for years, and are very familiar with the nuances of the story, I recommend the Salt Lake Tribune. The other newspaper in Utah that has covered the FLDS extensively is the Deseret Morning News, which publishes good stories but does not organize them in an ongoing, user-friendly manner.

For background, you might also like Mike Watkiss's work, which you can sample at AZ Family and KTVK channel 3 in Phoenix. You will find his work very passionate, opinionated, and interesting. Along those same lines, other resources include Banking on Heaven, a documentary made by a former member of the FLDS church.

Most of the resources you are likely to find are solidly against polygamy. If you are searching for a pro-polygamy source, go to www.principlevoices.org. There, you will find how polygamists themselves view their religious lifestyle. It is important to note that polygamy is more diverse than the typical news broadcast would suggest. Some cite only the Bible and have no connection to Joseph Smith (founder of the 'Mormon' church), and others have no religious affiliation at all. Even among polygamists under the Mormon umbrella, the version of polygamy practiced by the FLDS is different from that practiced by most. Although firm numbers are elusive, marriage between older men and teen girls, as practiced among the FLDS, is not supported by the greater number of polygamists, including most of those who broke away from the larger LDS Church when it distanced itself from polygamy a century ago.

My interest in the story stems in large part from having known polygamists many years ago. For example, in college at Southern Utah University I played tuba and sat next to a trombone player from Colorado City, Utah, the home of the FLDS church. I can't help but wonder what has happened to him and other polygamists I met during those years. By all accounts, the FLDS church has gone through tremendous changes, large enough that the town and church community that invited my college band to play a concert would not have done once Warren Jeffs became their prophet. I recall seeing Leroy Johnson (then leader of the FLDS) interviewed on the CBS News program 60 Minutes in the late 1970s or 1980s ... something that Warren Jeffs would be loathe to do.

One interesting item I ran across is found in this AP News story. The spokesperson for Texas Child Protective Services, Marleigh Meisner, indicated that she was involved in the infamous raid on the Branch Davidians in Waco. She did not elaborate, however, on the nature of her involvement in that tragedy. I have yet to meet a social scientist of religion who believes that the Waco standoff was handled well. We can only hope that the events happening now are handled better.

Doomsday Group Emerges

A doomsday group in Russia has emerged from its cave where they were awaiting the end of the world, according to this story from CBC News in Canada. I did not see coverage of the group in my usual US news sources, and so thought that you might also have missed hearing of the news. The CBC describes them as nominally Christian, with a leader who claims to be a prophet.

This news might be of use to people teaching a course in psych of religion or related topics.

Russia: Problems of Controlling Psycho-emotional Conditions

Psychologists at Astrakhan State University are hosting a conference devoted to psycho-emotional health, October 3-5, 2008. They invite your participation, either in person or by submitting a paper for publication in the conference proceedings.

I am convinced that meeting colleagues in other countries & cultures, and exchanging ideas with them about our common interests, is one of the most important ways that we can advance our understanding of psychology throughout the world. Encountering different perspectives encourages us to examine our own assumptions more critically.

Please, give serious thought to participating in this conference, even if "only" remotely, by sending a paper. Your work will be read eagerly by psychologists in Russia, and you will be rewarded with the chance to read some of their work as well. The cost is low, both in terms of the exchange rate and in terms of the time investment required to write an article for the conference. But the payoff can be great, as you expand your contact with psychologists in Russia and elsewhere.

Here are the details I have at this time:
